“Grown in Canada” Label - It’s Time!

I found a very welcome news story last week. Apparently, the federal government is proposing a review of the “Product of Canada” label on food. Currently, so long as 51% of the production costs were incurred in Canada, the item can be labelled “Product of Canada.”
This, understandably, creates a lot of confusion for shoppers. When [...]

Meat recalled from Winnipeg stores

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has expanded the recall of meats originating from Ranchers Beef Ltd. in Alberta. Earlier, the meat producer was fingered for the E. coli outbreak which ultimately forced Topps Meat Co. out of business.
Now, the expanded recall list includes meat products that were sold in several stores in Winnipeg, including Food [...]

100 Mile Manitoba

It’s amazing what a simple glance through the paper at lunchtime can teach you.
At lunch today, I happened to see an article in the Winnipeg Free Press about 100 Mile Manitoba, a group of 100+ people who are pledging to follow the 100 mile diet for three months starting in September. I jotted down [...]

Tyson Foods going Antibiotic-Free

Tyson Foods, one of the United States’ largest poultry producers, has announced that they will no longer be using antibiotics for their fresh chicken sold in stores. The chicken will cost slightly more as a result of this change, but they anticipate that the change will actually increase demand for their chicken.
Personally, I know that [...]

That’s Not Monkfish!

What an odd coincidence; I found an article today that combined my points from two recent posts: Chinese Food Imports Under Microscope and DNA Test that Sushi!
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that two consumers were hospitalized after eating pufferfish that was mislabelled as monkfish. The fish was imported from China.
Pufferfish is also known as fugu. [...]

Chinese Food Imports Under Microscope

Have you been keeping up on the pet food/Chinese import food scandal as it unfolds? It’s been quite a ride.
On April 30, the New York Times had a story about how adding “filler” to animal feed is a common practice in China. (It’s also a common practice in North America as well, although not widely-known; [...]

DNA Test that Sushi!!

We had dinner at the Sushi Train last night. While we were eating, I was thinking about an article I read recently. The Chicago Sun Times did DNA testing on red snapper at 14 different restaurants around Chicago. None of them - not one - was really red snapper. Most of them were tilapia, while [...]

CFIA on Lookout for Melamine

So, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is now seizing shipments of vegetable proteins from China and testing them for melamine. Nothing like closing the barn door after the horse has already gotten out.
Also mentioned in the article:
The government doesn’t know if ingredients contaminated with melamine have made it into human food before.
It says that [...]
