Restaurant Dubrovnik Location to Change?
One of the places which has been on our “list of places to eat” here in Winnipeg is Restuarant Dubrovnik. We’ve heard nothing but good things about this place, which has been favorably reviewed in several places.
There has been some property speculation along Assiniboine Avenue which leads me to think that we should make our visit soon, as Restuarant Dubrovnik may not be there for much longer. The Winnipeg Free Press is reporting that Royal LePage and Coldwell Bankers are interested in building a luxury condo tower on the site currently occupied by Restuarant Dubrovnik.
This particular condo/hotel plan would require the demolition or relocation of Restaurant Dubrovnik, a downtown Winnipeg landmark but is not listed as a heritage building. The restaurant’s owner declined to comment on the proposal, explaining such talk would be bad for business.
“These are just preliminary discussions,” he said.
It would be a shame, in my opinion. There are a few cruddy and run down buildings in that area, even along the river; there’s no need to tear down a beautiful old house to make room for a glass tower. I’m wondering if the restaurant doesn’t own the land, and it’s the landowner who’s interested. In any event, it’ll be a shame if it goes though as proposed.
Look for a review of Restaurant Dubrovnik in the not-so-distant future.

FYI.
Lived in Winnipeg for 21 years … and always wanted to go to Restaurant Dubrovnik. Last Year, for my birthday, I splurged and treated myself to a night at the Restaurant. I made a reservation well in advance and ordered my meal at that time (Beef Wellington.)
I arrived at the Restaurant with my guest … hardly anyone there at all but thats ok … I surmise the service will be that much more attentive.
The meal came …. however the Beef Wellington was not at all what I expected. It seemed tasteless and something was oddly wrong about the meal but I just couldnt figure it out. When the waiter asked I was honest and indicated that I wasnt impressed and it really did not seem to surprise him. The meal was reduced to half price … big deal … it was my birthday, I’d waited years to get to Dubrovniks and it did not measure up. You know what they say about first impressions …
It was not until later when I got home that I finally realized what had most likely happened. The Wellington had been missed on the reservation. Instead of a nice chunk of Filet Mignon, some sirlion was chopped up and thrown into filo pastry with pate…. two individual portions were made and served up!
Needless to say … I would not miss Dubrovniks at all. Sure, a meal can be off and even service can not always be up to standard however the Value heaped on Dubrovniks is beyond understanding when customers are not treated with honesty.
I do hope that when you visit Dubrovniks that you go anonymously … only then can you be assured of its true quality.
