Scallop and Corn Chowder

I’ve generally steered away from cooking seafood. I’ve made salmon and tuna and shrimp, etc etc… But it always scares me. I’m not sure why, but it just seems like seafood is really easy to mess up. I’m not sure where this fear came from, but there it is.
(In light of our trying to “eat [...]

CFIA on Lookout for Melamine

So, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is now seizing shipments of vegetable proteins from China and testing them for melamine. Nothing like closing the barn door after the horse has already gotten out.
Also mentioned in the article:
The government doesn’t know if ingredients contaminated with melamine have made it into human food before.
It says that [...]

Potato and Cheese Soup in a Bread Bowl

Part of growing up and learning new things is learning how to follow directions. If you don’t follow directions, you get marks off and bad things can happen. Gradually, you start learning the occasions in which it’s ok to not follow directions; hopefully this is undertaken with the understanding that you’ll have to accept the [...]

Restaurant Dubrovnik Location to Change?

One of the places which has been on our “list of places to eat” here in Winnipeg is Restuarant Dubrovnik. We’ve heard nothing but good things about this place, which has been favorably reviewed in several places.
There has been some property speculation along Assiniboine Avenue which leads me to think that we should make our [...]

Sushi Train (aka, Sushi just like Mom used to make*)

There are three Sushi Trains in Winnipeg; this review is for the Sushi Train at the Forks. All three restaurants are similar, with their individual quirks. (For example, the service at the Pembina Sushi Train has historically been a bit frazzled and disorganized, but as we haven’t been there for a long time I can’t [...]

Another Pet Food Recall…

Natural Balance, which was touted as a great alternative to the grocery-store brands that were hit by the Menu Foods recall last month, announced that it is recalling two specific varieties of dog and cat food. The recall affects Venison & Brown Rice Dry dog food and Venison & Green Pea Dry cat food.
The question, [...]

Recall Update #2: Royal Canin

Royal Canin has recalled their Medi-Cal Feline Dissolution Formula canned diet due to contaminated wheat gluten. This food was manufactured in Menu Foods’ Ontario plant, and is the only Royal Canin canned food which contains wheat gluten. It is only sold by vets.
The despair has just become resignation, and waiting to hear which product is [...]

Organic vs Locally Grown Food

About a month ago, we shopped at Organza Market, a grocery store which specializes in organic and natural foods. We bought a few things, and for the most part we were pleased with what we got.
One of the items we purchased was Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies. They were great-tasting, and completely suitable replacements for Pepperidge [...]

200 Calories

My husband and I tend to eat well… That is, we eat healthy foods: lots of fruit and veggies, whole grains and fats in moderation. Our problem is in portion control. Part of the issue is that there are only two of us, and most recipies are designed for families of four or more. We [...]
