Turkey, Olives and Pet Food, oh my!
Coming on the heels of the Lilydale sliced turkey breast recall (the affected meat may have contained salmonella), Marcella’s Garden is recalling tubs of olives because they may have botulism.
Turkey and olives. Who cares, right? On to the real show: cat food!
Well, the source of the contamination has been found: the wheat used in making the pet food was contaminated with rat poison. Some reports have suggested that the poison was put into the wheat at its origin, China, to - you know - kill rats. There’s at least one class action suit in getting started. Was the company negligent in not testing their new wheat for poison? I don’t know about that; I suppose that the manufacturer would have a reasonable expectation that a food product would be received without poison in it. Was the company negligent in not alerting someone - if not the public, then at least the FDA - as soon as a problem was discovered? Maybe.
I’ll be interested to see how this plays out for a few reasons, not the least of which are the foil packets of Iams sitting in our cabinet right now waiting to see if the recall is expanded.
